The Sparkasse Göttingen , based in Göttingen in Lower Saxony, is the oldest public savings bank in Germany. Its business area is the district of Göttingen minus the communities that belong to the former districts of Duderstadt , Münden and Osterode am Harz . Municipal savings bank in Göttingen

The history of today's Sparkasse Göttingen goes back to 1801. At that time the first public savings bank was established by the city senator Justus Christoph Grünewald. Initially, the rooms of the young Sparkasse were technically and spatially connected to the city treasury. This only changed in 1877, when the Sparkasse was merged with the city's pawnshop and was able to move into its first own business premises in the following years. In the further course the Sparkasse was able to develop well and so the first branches were opened between 1928 and 1930.

Kreissparkasse Göttingen

The first predecessor institutes of the Kreissparkasse were founded in 1857 (“Spar-Casse zu Reinhausen”) and 1870 (“Spar- und Leihkasse für dem Amt Göttingen”). The first branches were also opened in the years 1928–1930. In 1931 the Sparkasse of the district of Göttingen zu Göttingen merged with the Sparkasse of the district of Göttingen zu Reinhausen . The merged savings bank was named Kreissparkasse Göttingen .

The two houses finally merged in 1990.

In 2020 the Sparkasse Göttingen took on the Sparkasse Münden .
