It was created in 2016 through the merger of Sparkasse Lünen, founded in 1853, which in 1975 with parts of Sparkasse Lüdinghausen from the business area of the municipality of Selm became the "Zweckverbandssparkasse der Stadt Lünen und Selm", with Stadtsparkasse Werne.
