history

Today's Sparkasse Markgräflerland emerged from the merger of the district savings banks Weil am Rhein and Müllheim in 1972.

In Müllheim, the Muellheim savings fund was founded on November 21, 1838 as a private-law association with a non-profit orientation in order to “collect the small savings of its members, invest them safely and increase them through temporary grants and through interest and compound interest.” In 1883, the savings fund was in the wake renamed a new regulation of the legal form in "Sparkasse des Bezirks Müllheim". Until the merger with the district savings bank Weil am Rhein in 1972 it comprised a total of 30 liable municipalities.

The district savings bank Weil am Rhein was founded on July 29, 1842 - with the approval of the Grand Ducal Baden Government of the Upper Rhine District in Freiburg - also as a "savings company". In 1918 it comprised eight communities, in 1925 the Sparkasse Grenzach was added and finally the savings societies Efringen (1928) and Kirchen (1929).

Social Commitment

The Sparkasse Markgräflerland promotes art and culture as well as youth work in associations with two Sparkasse-owned foundations. In addition, donors can get involved in the region through the “Foundation for the Markgräflerland”. Charitable organizations are also supported through numerous donations and sponsoring activities.
