Weingartia is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the German industrialist and amateur botanist Wilhelm Weingart .

description

The species of the genus Weingartia grow individually or sprout. Its spherical to short cylindrical shoots have fibrous roots or a thickened taproot . Their ribs are flat and more or less humped. The areoles on the top of the humps are slightly sunken. Different shaped thorns arise from the areoles that are never hooked.

The funnel- to bell-shaped flowers are yellow to red and purple in color. They appear at the tip of the shoot or in a wreath on the edge of the shoot. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with scales and otherwise bare.

The fruits are depressed spherical to spherical, often somewhat fleshy when ripe and tearing open transversely or elongated drop-shaped and drying up when ripe. The fruits contain round to elongated egg-shaped, matt brown-black seeds 0.7 to 1.8 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Weingartia is common in central and southern Bolivia as well as in northern Argentina .

The first description of the genus was published in 1937 by Erich Werdermann . The type species of the genus is Echinocactus fidanus .

The systematic position of the genus has not been fully clarified. The International Cactus Systematics Group of the International Organization for Succulent Research regards the species as belonging to the genus Rebutia . The genus is closely related to the genus Sulcorebutia . More recent studies could not confirm a relationship with the genus Gymnocalycium . The genus was provisionally recognized until the clarification of the taxonomic problems in Urs Eggli's editing of the cactus lexicon by Edward F. Anderson .

The genus Weingartia includes the following species:

Synonyms of the genus are Spegazzinia Backeb. (1934, nom. Illeg. ICBN -Article 53.1) and Gymnorebutia Doweld (2002).
