The Sphingobacteriales are an order of bacteria . It is the only order of the Sphingobacteriia class and consists of two families: Filobacteriaceae and Sphingobacteriaceae .

Appearance

The gram test is negative. Some species are motile by sliding. They are rod-shaped. The colonies are often colored yellow. An important characteristic of the Sphingobacteriaceae are sphingolipids , namely sphingophospholipids and ceramides . The sphingolipids distinguish them greatly from most other bacteria, since most bacteria do not have sphingophospholipids. Species that contain sphingolipids include e.g. B. to the family Sphingomonadaceae , to the Proteobacteria , and some species of the Bacteroides , important inhabitants of the human intestine, which, like the Sphingobacteriaceae, belong to the Bacteroidetes .

metabolism

All species are chemo-organotrophic . The majority of the species are aerobic , some are also facultative anaerobic . The menaquinone is MK type 7.

Occurrence

The occurrence of the Sphingobacterales is very diverse. Representatives of the Saprospiraceae have been found in fresh and marine water. The species Anseongella ginsenosidimutans was isolated from the soil of a ginseng growing area . Filobacterium rodentium was found as a pathogen in various test animals such as mice and rabbits, the species name F. rodentium refers to rodents (Rodentia).

Systematics

The order of the Sphingobacteriales was created on the basis of 16S rRNA sequences . It consists of two families:

The genus Fodinibius is listed under this order, but not yet assigned to a family.

The Chitinophagaceae family , which was previously managed here, is now added to the new Chitinophagia class created in 2017 .
