Spiders is a French computer game development studio based in Paris .

history

Spiders managing director Jehanne Rousseau at the science fiction festival Utopiales 2011 in Nantes.

The company was founded in 2008 by developers of the action role-playing game Silverfall by Monte Cristo . The focus of the studio is accordingly on action role-playing games, but also commissioned work such as porting. The studio works mainly with the French publisher Focus Home Interactive . After Faery: Legends of Avalon , which was published exclusively digitally, In 2012, In collaboration with the French developer Cyanide Studios , Of Orcs and Men was the first major in-house development. In 2013, the now solely developed action role-playing game Mars: War Logs followed . After Bound by Flame in May 2014, the Mars successor The Technomancer was launched in 2016 .

In 2018, the games magazine IGN named Spiders, based on The Technomancer, as a successful representative of a gradually emerging market for B-games (based on B-movies ). These have a significantly lower budget than so-called AAA top productions . As a result, the games often do not achieve the quality of a blockbuster either in terms of play or content, but can sometimes build a benevolent and loyal fan base through creative ideas. Even GameSpot compared the role of Spiders in the gaming industry with the ratio of the Syfy channels to Hollywood " to eager but far less grandiose adaptation it takes a popular big-budget concept and Creates " (German: "It takes a popular big-budget Concept and developed from it a hard-working, but less great adaptation. "). For its in-house production, the studio uses the self-developed Silk Engine, a modification of Sony's PhyreEngine .

At the end of July 2019, the French publisher Bigben Interactive announced that it had taken over Spiders in order to expand its portfolio in the field of computer role-playing games and to become the leading publisher in the field of medium-sized AA productions. With this, Bigben took over another studio after Cyanide, which had previously developed exclusively for the competitor Focus Home Interactive for a long time. The last collaboration with Focus was the role-playing game Greedfall for Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in September 2019 .
