The Spirit of Britain is a ferry of the British shipping company P&O Ferries that entered service in 2011 . It is used together with its identical sister ship Spirit of France on the route from Dover to Calais and together with it is the largest ferry that has ever been in service on this route.

history

The Spirit of Britain was laid down on August 25, 2009 under the shipyard number 1367 at STX Europe in Rauma, Finland . The launching of the ship took place on 8 June of 2010. After test drives in November 2010, the Spirit of Britain was delivered to P&O Ferries on January 5, 2011 and put on liner service from Dover to Calais on January 21, 2011.

On February 4, 2011, the ship had to interrupt the liner service due to technical problems. It was brought to Zeebrugge and put back into service on February 6, 2011 after the machinery there was overhauled.

The Spirit of Britain was officially baptized on March 24, 2011 . The ship's godmother was former middle-distance runner Kelly Holmes .

On January 23, 2016, a group of 50 refugees and political activists stormed the ferry in Calais. The refugees had previously come to France in the course of the refugee crisis in Europe in the hope of reaching England. Western political activists persuaded 350 of them, according to press reports, to storm the barriers to the port, around 50 people ended up on the Spirit of Britain . Several people were arrested.
