History of the Bülach Hospital

In 1831 the Bülach teacher Johannes Brunner emigrated to England. His three sons were all sent back to Switzerland at the age of 16 to attend schools. So did his second oldest son, John Brunner, who was born in 1842. As a result, he remained connected to his original homeland, Switzerland. In 1873 he founded the chemical company Brunner, Mond and Company with the German Ludwig Mond . In 1927 this company developed into the chemical group Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). His economic merits were awarded a title of nobility by Queen Victoria . In 1900, in honor of his father, he donated the sum of 5,000 pounds sterling (approx. 126,000 Swiss francs) to the city of Bülach for the construction of a community hospital.

Until the 1930s, hospitals were run by head nurses. From 1902 to 1927, Sister Cleophea Fehr was the leading sister in charge of the new Bülach hospital. She was also a manager for care, human resources, finance, housekeeping, kitchen, land and garden, technical services, training and doctor coordination. In 1927 she was granted honorary citizenship of the Bülach community.

The Bülach District Hospital Association was founded in 1935. The hospital no longer belonged to the municipality of Bülach, but to an association consisting of the municipalities of Bachenbülach , Bülach , Glattfelden , Hochfelden , Eglisau , Höri , Rafz , Wasterkingen , Hüntwangen , Wil and Winkel .

In 2012, the Bülach Hospital decided that the Zweckverband was no longer the appropriate legal form for the future development of the hospital. Therefore, in 2014, the 34 municipalities of the association voted on a change in legal form to a stock corporation. The population accepted the vote and the Bülach Hospital was converted into the Bülach AG Hospital in 2015.
