The hospital church in Merano

The Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit ( Italian Chiesa di Santo Spirito ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Merano . It is located in the Mais cadastral community next to the Passer at the beginning of Romstrasse. The late Gothic hall church is one of the most important buildings in the city and has been a listed building since 1949 . The Way of the Cross in the Flemish style comes from Benedikt Schinle (1859–1927).

history

Outside the historic city center and the city walls of Merano, south of the bridgehead of the Passer on the road to Bozen , Count Meinhard II of Tyrol-Gorizia had a hospital and the accompanying hospital church built, which was consecrated to the Holy Spirit . This first church fell victim to the great flood of 1419 and was almost completely destroyed, while the hospital itself appears in 1428 as "spytal an Meran" in a Terlan document. In 1468, the facility was referred to in a Merano record as “Spital auffem Rain located in Maiser parish” . Duke Siegmund der Münzreich had the new church built, which was consecrated in 1483. Stone blocks in front of the church and frescoes inside depicting the catastrophe are reminiscent of the devastating flood. In 1951 the church becomes an Italian-speaking parish.

The hospital itself was still used as such until 1905, in the same year the new building of the Merano hospital took over its function. The building was demolished in 1939.

Church interior, vaults and pillars in the choir

The interior of the church building is structured by four buttresses. The facade, which is crowned by a turret , is dominated by the beautiful Gothic portal. It is divided into two halves by a pillar on which there is a statue of the Madonna. Above in the arched field, the relief of the Holy Trinity can be seen in the form of a mercy seat , which is flanked by two donor figures. On the southern outer wall is the fresco of a crucifixion group (around 1450) by Ambrosius Gander .

The interior is of the type of a three-aisled hall church. Several columns support a star-ribbed vault. The decagonal choir with a fresco of the Trinity and the baroque organ of the church are remarkable .
