description

illustration

The pointed-leaved pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. It becomes very brittle in autumn. Their rhizome is attached to the mud with a tap root. The stem is flat and wingless. The leaves are green, 1.5 to 4.5 millimeters wide, often pointed long, three to rarely five-nerved; often provided with one or two distinct, blackish cusps on the leaf base, which form white secondary roots, especially in muddy water. The ligule is up to 2 centimeters long.

The flowering period extends from June to August. With a length of 0.5 to 5.5 centimeters, the inflorescence stem is hardly longer than the ear. Four to six flowers stand together in a 2.5 to 5.5 centimeter long spike inflorescence . The flowers have a diameter of about 1.5 millimeters.

The fruits are 3 to 4 mm long and 2.3 to 3 mm wide, clearly and almost straight beaked.

Turions are seldom formed.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 26.

ecology

The slit-leaved pondweed is an aquatic plant , a hydromorphic hydrophyte . The slit-leaved pondweed shows strong population fluctuations .

Occurrence

The slit-leaved pondweed is widespread in Europe and occurs as far as the Caucasus. Their main occurrence is in Central Europe; there their distribution area extends from southern England via France to western Russia . The southern border of the distribution runs from southwest France over central Italy to Bulgaria , seen from here you can find it north of the Black Sea to the Volga plate . The northern limit of the settlement is in southern Sweden at approx. 60 ° north latitude.

The slit-leaved pondweed grows in standing or slowly flowing, alkaline - and sometimes also lime-rich , meso to slightly eutrophic waters, it tolerates short-term winter dehydration. It is rooted in ponds , rare in backwaters and trenches, preferably about Gyttja - floors in 0.3 to 1.6 meters of water. It is a character species of the Potamogetonion association.
