The Sprewanen were a Slavic tribe that settled in what is now Berlin .

history

The Sprewanen reached the Berlin area during the migration of peoples in the 7th century and established settlements in the sparsely populated area on both sides of the Spree . They lived on the Barnim and the Ostteltow . The main settlement and power center of the Sprewanen became the main castle and settlement on the later Köpenick Castle Island , Copnic , at the confluence of the Spree and Dahme. They lived together with the remnants of the Germanic population. The Germanic tribes eventually merged with the Slavic part of the population.

In addition to the Sprewanen there were also the Hevellers , also known as Stodorans, in the Berlin area . They settled in the west with the Havelland as their center; its capital was the future city of Brandenburg an der Havel .

While the well-preserved Heveller Castle in Spandau was able to answer many open questions from historical and archaeological research, this was not the case in Köpenick . In the course of intensive excavations after the Second World War , however, it was at least possible to discover the late Slavic fortifications of the coin-making Sprewanen prince Jaxa .

Heveller and Sprewanen are part of the Wilzen and did not belong to any community that formed a state . Rather, there were several small tribes that were probably ruled from aristocratic residences that had originally been fortresses. The Wilzen also included the Ukranen in the Uckermark , the Redarians and the Circipans in eastern Mecklenburg, and the Tollensians on the Tollense .
