Srđan Šaper (born October 9, 1958 in Belgrade , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian musician and founder of the McCann Group, a provider of services in the field of market communication in Southeast Europe . He is known as a founding member of the band " VIS Idoli ", which triggered the new wave of the music and cultural scene in the former SFR Yugoslavia in the 1980s.

Life

Srđan Šaper attended the “Sveti Sava” elementary school and the eighth Belgrade grammar school, now known as the third Belgrade grammar school. His father, Radomir Šaper, was a university professor and vice dean at the Faculty of Metallurgy and Technology at the University of Belgrade, a national basketball player of Yugoslavia and a sports activist. After graduating from high school, Srđan Šaper first studied medicine. He broke off his studies to begin training at the Faculty of Drama Arts in Belgrade, which he later completed at the Chair of Film and TV Directing.

Music career

VIS idoli

During his studies at the Medical Faculty of the University in Belgrade, Šaper met Nebojša Krstić . In 1979 they founded the band VIS Idoli together with Vlado Divljan . The band later became one of the most important representatives of the new wave and one of the most popular bands in the former Yugoslavia .

VIS Idoli were founded on March 1st, 1980. Her songs Retko te viđam sa devojkama (“I rarely meet you with girls”) and Pomoć, pomoć (“Help, Help”) were released a month later as the first single in the April issue of the then popular Vidici magazine .

Idoli later release the single Maljčiki ("boys"), with a new version of the song Retko te viđam sa devojkama . The spot for the song Maljčiki was first broadcast on New Year's Eve 1981 on the Rokenroler program. The song, which was very controversial at the time, became a hit across Yugoslavia, the single edition reached first place on the hit list and was declared hit of the year by many critics.

Albums

The first album (actually a mini LP) by VIS Idoli was released under the title VIS Idoli . In addition to six new songs, two bonus songs , Retko te viđam sa devojkama and Maljčiki , were also included.

The next album from 1982, Odbrana i poslednji dani (“Defense and the Last Days”), is named after the novel of the same name by Borislav Pekić . It was recognized by music critics as the best album in 1982 and the best album of YU rock in the 20th century.

The third album was released in 1983 the next year under the name Čokolada ("Chocolate"). With 350,000 copies sold, the album was one of the best-selling albums in Yugoslavia at the time, along with the album Mrtva priroda ("Still life") by Riblja čorba .

VIS Idoli's last LP was Šest dana juna (“Six Days of June”) and contained music from the film of the same name. Since that album the band practically no longer exists. Srđan Šaper was involved in the last recordings of VIS Idoli as a singer.

Later career

After the dissolution of “VIS Idoli” in 1984, Šaper played Spiridon Kopicl in the film Davitelj protiv davitelja (“Strangler against Strangler”) and continued to produce music. He wrote Beogradski davitelj (“Belgrade Strangler”), which he sang with the band VIS Simboli .

In 1986 he founded the band Unutrašnja imperija ("Inner Empire") with Nebojša Krstić . In the same year they recorded the album Poslednja mladost u Jugoslaviji ("The last youth in Yugoslavia"), which was published by Jugoton. At the same time he composed music for the television drama Šumanović - komedija umetnika .

In March 1991 he appeared as a guest at the concert of the band Akcija in SKC and sang Beogradski davitelj ("Belgrade strangler") from the film Davitelj protiv davitelja ("Strangler against strangler").

In 1995 Srđan Šaper, Nebojša Krstić and Zoran Kiki Lesendrić founded the band Dobrovoljno pevačko društvo ("Voluntary Choral Society"). The band recorded the album “Nedelja na Duhove” (“Pentecost Sunday”) in Budapest . Šaper is the composer of the album and songwriter of some of the songs that make this album famous: Čekaj me (“Wait for me”), Zemlja (“Earth”), Sestrice mala (“Little sister”) etc.

In 1996 Srđan Šaper and Nebojša Krstić were involved in the band Akcija's debut album called 7 dana (“7 days”).

In 1999 the song Razvod 1999 and Parada ("Divorce 1999" and "The Parade") appeared as a compilation of Rock'n'roll - Ravno do dna ("Until the end").

Entrepreneurial career

Srđan Šaper has been active in marketing since the 1980s. Before founding the McCann Erickson agency , he worked as a creative director and director in the agencies SM Delo , Borba , Ogilvy & Mather , Saatchi & Saatchi and Idols & Friends .

In 1997 he signed a contract with the McCann Erikson agency, and has since founded advertising agencies in Belgrade , Skopje and Podgorica . Since 2013 he has been head of the McCann Group, which is active in eight countries in Southeast Europe ( Serbia , Montenegro , Macedonia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Albania , Croatia , Slovenia and Bulgaria ).

Srđan Šaper is the initiator of numerous cultural and communication projects. He is the originator of the pioneering project to improve the image of Serbia "La Serbie version original", which was presented in Paris in November 2000 with the aim of presenting Serbia after 2000.

Entrepreneur awards

  • In 2003 or 2004, Šaper received an award from UEPS, the Serbian Market Communication Association, for promoting and developing the advertising industry.

Šaper teaches communication at the master’s degree at the Faculty of Drama Arts of the University of Belgrade and lectures at numerous international conferences in the field of advertising and political marketing.

He was a committee member of several state organizations and companies, including the Open Society Institute, Congress Center “Sava”, Belgrade Fortress, Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade, Serbian Association of Managers, Committee of the Belgrade Philharmonic Foundation, where he was chairman of the board.

Political career

In 1990, Šaper became a member of the Democratic Party and participated in the organization of the first political campaign for the Democratic Party, which took place before the first elections in Serbia since 1945, as well as in numerous other campaigns of the party.

He was a member of the Presidium of the Democratic Party from 2008 to 2010 and from September 2011 to November 2012.
