Srpska Crnja ( Serbian - Cyrillic Српска Црња , German Serbian-Zerne ) is a place in the municipality of Nova Crnja in the Serbian district of Srednji Banat . It is located in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia, right on the border with Romania . The place has 4,283 inhabitants (2002). The population is predominantly Serbian .
geography
Srpska Crnja is located about 160 km north of Belgrade , 90 km northeast of Novi Sad and about 1.5 km from the border with Romania. The place is surrounded by fields used for agriculture, as the region has very fertile soil. This means that the main source of income for the residents is agriculture. The environment in this part of the Banat region is very flat. The place is at an altitude of 72 meters above sea level. There is a temperate continental climate.
history
Srpska Crnja is mentioned for the first time in 1373. At that time still under the name Čorna . The name Srpska Crnja roughly means Serbian blackness . The place developed over the centuries from several settlements. Some that have remained famous are Čorna , Crna greda , Crno Selište and Rokoš . In 1775 the local Orthodox church was completed.
Personalities
The famous artist, writer and teacher Đura Jakšić (1832–1878) was born in Srpska Crnja. In his honor there is a museum in town.
