In the village of Nova Crnja the population has decreased by about half from the first survey in the SFR Yugoslavia to the present day: while the census in 1948 had 3,185 inhabitants, today there are only 1,509 people living in the village; since 1961 the population has been falling steadily.

According to the 2002 census, the village itself is predominantly populated by Magyars (84.57 percent), while Serbs (6.01 percent), Roma (4.67 percent) and Yugoslavs (1.88 percent) make up the larger minorities . In addition, small numbers of Croats , Germans , Romanians , Macedonians and Albanians still live in the village.

In contrast, the entire community of Nova Crnja is mostly Serbian; they represent the absolute majority with 67.39 percent. Larger minorities are the Magyars (17.71 percent) and the Roma (9.89 percent); Croatians, Montenegrins , Macedonians, Romanians and Germans form smaller minorities .

All villages in the area of ​​the municipality of Nova Crnja are predominantly Serbian, with the exception of the village of Nova Crnja itself and the village of Toba.
