Stückemarkt of the Berlin Theatertreffen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stückemarkt of the Berliner Theatertreffen was founded in 1978 as the first funding initiative for new drama in German-speaking countries. It is a platform for plays that have not yet been performed and a writing school for budding dramatists. The Stückemarkt is committed to bringing new pieces to the theater schedules.

history

Since it was founded, a total of 203 authors have taken part in the Stückemarkt, including those who later became known such as Elfriede Jelinek , who with her play Was Happened after Nora had left her husband or was invited to support society in the first year and was still considered an Austrian insider tip at the time.

In the first twenty years of the festival, the Stückemarkt management selected five pieces each year from those free to premiere in order to present them to a wider audience at the Theatertreffen. There was no jury at the time - the Stückemarkt manager was solely responsible for the program.

In 2003, the Stückemarkt opened to authors from all over Europe who could submit theater texts in the original language. The presentation of new dramas for theater people turned into a competition for as yet unknown authors. A jury of experts has since sifted through hundreds of plays, of which between five and seven will be presented in staged readings during the Theatertreffen.

Awards and work contracts, collaborations with partner theaters and a radio station were later introduced, an international network was established and the translation of the plays into English, the realization of master classes and dramatist workshops and the assumption of one-year sponsorships for the authors were established. With the Theatertreffen symposium “Schleudergang Neue Dramatik” (2009), the Stückemarkt initiated further steps in the cooperation between dramatists and theaters, such as the expansion of in-house authorship. In 2012, the Stückemarkt expanded its definition of the author: for the first time, project work by theater collectives was admitted to the competition. A performer duo was invited to develop their submitted concept in the newly established project laboratory and to present the result at the Stückemarkt.

On its 35th anniversary in 2013, the Stückemarkt took stock and looked into the future: 35 authors who were invited to the Stückemarkt were presented with new works. 30 authors wrote short texts on the topic “Where to? Decline and fall of western civilization ”, u. a. Herbert Achternbusch, John von Düffel, Elfriede Jelinek, Oliver Kluck, Dirk Laucke, Anne Lepper, Philipp Löhle, Wolfram Lotz, Marius von Mayenburg, Roland Schimmelpfennig, Einar Schleef, Werner Schwab and Nis-Momme Stockmann.

In 2014, the examination of new models of authorship, which had already begun by the project laboratory in 2012 and the anniversary in 2013, was pursued: for the 36th edition of the Stückemarkt, three Theatertreffen sponsors looked for artists who would develop new theater languages.

In 2015, the selection process for the Stückemarkt was changed. A five-person artist jury and an open competition were reintroduced, as well as new selection criteria that can be applied equally to theater texts and theater projects. Since 2016, the Stückemarkt has been awarding a work contract together with the Federal Agency for Civic Education / bpb.

The competition was announced internationally for the first time with the 2019 Stückemarkt. Authors and theater collectives can apply equally with theater texts and theater projects. A five-person jury of artists will select five works from the entries. As part of the Theatertreffen, the selected works will be presented according to their form - as guest performances, staged readings, performances, site-specific formats, etc.

Maria Nübling has been the head of the Stückesmarkt since the 2018/19 season.
