The Catholic parish church of St-Germain in Gometz-la-Ville , a parish in the Essonne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The church is dedicated to St. Germanus , who was bishop of Paris in the 6th century and after whom the local church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is named.

Exterior construction

The windowless west facade of the church is reinforced by wide buttresses made of quarry stone. They were built at the end of the 18th century during the French Revolution when the wall threatened to collapse. The bell tower on the south side is covered by a hipped roof. The upper floor of the tower is broken through on all four sides by round-arched twin arcades.

The interior is divided into four bays . It consists of a main nave , which opens into a just closed choir in the east , and a south aisle, to which the Marienkapelle adjoins at the height of the choir.

The entire interior is covered with ribbed vaults. In the main nave, in the choir and in the Marienkapelle are the vaults with richly carved pendants from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century provided. A temple with arcades and caryatids is depicted on one keystone , and the heads of men and women can be seen on another. One keystone is decorated with vegetal decoration, on another one can be seen a winged angel's head on a disk. There are no keystones in the side aisle, it was probably built later.

The year 1818 and a stonemason's mark to commemorate construction work in that year are carved on the northwest pillar under the bell tower . During the renovation in 2003, remains of wall paintings on the vault were exposed again.

Leaded glass window

The stained glass windows in the Art Deco style were made by Raphaël Lardeur. The patron saint of the church, Germanus of Paris, is depicted on one window, and St. Therese of Lisieux on another .

Furnishing

  • Today's popular altar was formerly the front of a pew from the 18th century, which was reserved for the landlord . The back wall is used today as a choir stool .
  • The baptismal font is dated to the 17th century. It is carved from wood, the oval basin is lined with lead inside.
  • At the entrance to the choir a grave slab is set in the floor, on which two people are represented. The inscription shows that the buried person died in 1564.
