Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a Romanesque chapel in Argenteuil , a French town in the department of Val-d'Oise in the region of Ile-de-France , which was originally built in the 11th century. The chapel, which has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1945, is located at 19 rue Notre-Dame.

history

The chapel was located in the walled area of ​​the former Benedictine monastery Notre-Dame d'Argenteuil . It is not known what it was for. It may have been a burial chapel , as graves from the 8th and 9th centuries were discovered during excavations in 1942.

architecture

The rectangular chapel has three naves and a groin vault that rests on two columns . The central nave ends with an apse , which is vaulted with a barrel vault. A comprehensive restoration of the building took place in the 1980s.
