Main street in Busserolles with the Saint-Martial church

The Romanesque church of Saint-Martial in Busserolles is in the north of the Périgord . It was recognized as a Monument historique in 1958 .

location

The church dedicated to St. Martial is opposite the town hall (Mairie) on the main road (D 90) in the center of Busserolles, a municipality in the canton of Périgord Vert Nontronnais . It is therefore in the extreme north of the Dordogne department , only Saint-Paul in Reilhac occupies a position a little further north.

Architecture and building history

The building in the Romanesque style, built in the 12th century , was structurally very heavily modified in the 15th century .

Due to the renovations, only the north facade, the north side of the choir and the apse remain from the original building . The former single-nave church building was transformed into a double-nave building in the 15th century. The north aisle has three bays, whereas the south aisle has four bays . The two naves with cross ribbed vaults are supported in the middle by three large pillars and thus separated from each other. The pillars have carved corbels that support the cross ribs. The square church tower rises above the northern choir. The entrance portal on the north side is characteristic of the Limousin architectural style .
