The parish church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul in Paris ( 10th arrondissement ) is dedicated to Saint Vincent de Paul .

history

The church was built in the 19th century on the site of the historic Saint Lazare house. This housed the Congrégation de la Mission founded by Vincent de Paul from 1632 to 1793 , where he lived and worked.

The plans of the church were originally entrusted to the then highly regarded architect Jean-Baptiste Lepère . The foundation stone was laid on August 23, 1824 in the presence of the Prefect of the Seine Department Gaspard de Chabrol and the Archbishop of Paris Hyacinthe-Louis de Quélen . Lepère organized the start of construction in August 1824, but it was not until 1831, after some delays, that floor level was reached. Work on the building was slow and was even interrupted at times. Financing problems and probably also the July Revolution of 1830 delayed the project.

After all, it was Lepère's son-in-law, the Paris-based architect Jakob Ignaz Hittorff from Cologne , who continued the work from 1831. Hittorff changed his plan of a Corinthian order in the basement and designed a row of Ionic columns, completed into a five-aisled church, which was consecrated on October 25, 1844. Hittorff also came up with the idea of ​​the Place Franz-Liszt , which serves as a kind of church forecourt. He also designed a system of ramps to compensate for the difference in height and thus facilitate access for carriages. Today these are planted.

The gable made by Charles-François Lebœuf-Nanteuil above the portico , reminiscent of a Greek temple, serves the apotheosis of the eponym Vincent von Paul . The saint is surrounded by figures that symbolize his deeds: a missionary, a galley slave , the Sisters of Mercy who sacrifice themselves for the children and the sick. The interior of the nave is adorned by a frieze of paintings between two rows of columns, which extends to the chancel. It was created by Hippolyte Flandrin from 1848 to 1853 and represents 160 saints. The decoration in the apse of the Lady Chapel, added later, is by William Adolphe Bouguereau (1885-1889). The crucifix on the main altar was made by François Rude .

The church of St-Vincent-de-Paul (Paris) | St-Vincent-de-Paul (1823–1824, 1833–1844) was probably built by Lepère, the colored preliminary drawings as well as the polychrome furnishings and the roof truss were by Hittorff.

The organ was built in 1852 by the organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll . The instrument has 66 registers (4949 pipes ) on four manuals and pedal , whereby the fourth manual (solo) is vacant. The game and stop mechanisms were electrified in the 20th century.
