St. Bernhard Church

The St. Bernhard Church is a Catholic church in the Neckarstadt-Ost district of Mannheim . It was built between 1959 and 1961 according to plans by Josef Freienstein .

history

Residential development in the Neckarstadt north of Mannheim city center began to emerge in the second half of the 19th century. The Sacred Heart Church was built in the western part in 1904 and the St. Boniface Church in the eastern part in 1914 . Due to the strong increase in population the Neckar city dwellers parishes were even after the construction of the St. Nicholas Church in 1932 in the northwest so great that a fourth parish was necessary. In 1959 the St. Bernhard Curate was set up and the construction of a church began. Two years later she was finished and on 29 October 1961 was by Archbishop Hermann Schäufele ordained . In 1970 the curate was elevated to a parish .

In 2002 the parishes of St. Bernhard and St. Bonifatius were merged to form the pastoral care unit Neckarstadt-Ost. Today the parishes of St. Bernhard and St. Bonifatius with St. Nikolaus and Herz-Jesu form the Catholic parish of Mannheim-Neckarstadt in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

description

Front view

The St. Bernhard Church stands on a free space in a mixed area, surrounded by five-story residential buildings in a row construction and the industrial site of the MWM . The floor plan is derived from a parabola , with the south side broken open in a jagged manner to accommodate the tall windows that illuminate the choir . The height of the church corresponds to the neighborhood residential development. The original exposed concrete was covered with a coat of paint in 1984.

Albert Schilling from Basel created the marble altar . The lectern and the tabernacle stele were designed by the artist couple Lene and Dieter Sicker in 1975 . The bells in the 35 meter high tower were consecrated in 1965. The 135 square meter window on the entrance side, which Emil Wachter designed in 1984, is remarkable . With the basic color blue, it shows events on the subject of water from the New Testament .

organ

The organ was built in 1986 by the organ building company Mönch Orgelbau (Überlingen). The slider chest instrument has 34 sounding registers and two pre-prints (2190 pipes) on three manuals and pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
