The St. George's Church ( Polish Kościół św. Jerzego ) in Darłowo ( German  Rügenwalde ) was built as a hospital for lepers in the 15th century and is now a simple church in the Baltic Sea city in the north-east of the Polish West Pomeranian Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Darłowo is located northwest of the district town of Sławno (Schlawe) and can be reached via state road 37 from state road 6 (former German Reichsstraße 2 , now also Europastraße 28 ). In addition, the voivodship roads 203 (towards Ustka (Stolpmünde) and Koszalin (Köslin) ) and 205 (towards Sławno) connect the port city with the surrounding area. Darłowo is the terminus of the Sławno railway line .

The St. George's Church was formerly the starting point for the Wipper suburb. It is not far from the Wipperbrücke on the arterial road to Koszalin, Karwice and Sławno.

Church building

The building called St. Jürgen's Chapel at the time was mentioned as early as the 15th century. It was one of the hospital churches that were built as leper houses. Because of the risk of infection, it was outside the city and - unlike the St. Gertrud Church in the Stolpmünder Vorstadt - did not have its own cemetery.

Wall painting in memory of the church renovation in 1633

At the end of the 15th century, the building must have been subject to renovation, because the church was consecrated on November 2nd ( All Souls' Day ) by Camminer Bishop Martin Karith . In 1599 it was restored again because it had become damaged. In 1623 the church was assigned the bell of the St. Gertrud Church. A repeated renovation was due in 1633, which is still reminiscent of a mural today.

The church has a single nave and is twice as long as it is wide. The west tower only slightly protrudes from the church roof. It has an outer wall more than 1 meter thick and provides space for a bell that was cast in 1817.

The walls of the nave are broken through by 13 arched windows. The diamond-shaped disks are set in lead. A window in the north wall showed a special stained glass : two bears hold the coat of arms of those of Adebar . Underneath was the inscription: Senator Lorentz Adebar 1603 - in memory of the councilman, later treasurer and mayor, who died in 1628. Another old stained glass was in a window on the south wall. It showed - without further information - two crossed forks.

Overall, the formerly gray - now white - whitewashed walls give the church a rather sober appearance. An old wooden panel painting, which was not of great artistic value, was on the south wall and depicted Jesus Christ on the globe , with the Latin signature of the Jesus word from John 6: Truly, truly, I tell you who believes in me, he has eternal life .

The top of the altar had a simple carving that no longer exists today: the Lord's Supper , in white and gold. The pulpit was carved in a uniform style and kept in brown.
