The Protestant St. John's Church in Pömmelte was built in its current form in 1871.

History and architecture

The previous building of the Pommelter Church was built in the 16th century. 1871 was created in its place the Roman modeled style Saalkirche with a polygonal choir and a square West tower with a likewise polygonal tip. The outer walls were built with regularly hewn quarry stone blocks. The north and south sides are divided by three high, arched windows and two pilasters . While the spire is covered with slate, the nave and choir are tiled. In the mid-1930s, the roofs of the nave and the tower were covered. In the course of extensive renovation work in 1965, a heated community room was built into the nave.

Interior

At the tower entrance there is a stone from the previous church with the inscription “Here is nothing other than God's house and here is the gate of heaven. Anno 1590 ". The nave ends with an obtuse-angled wooden beam ceiling and has a three-sided gallery . The community room is located under the west gallery. In the five-part choir is the altar with an oil painting on wood from the 16th century by the German painter Adam Offinger , a student of Lucas Cranach the Younger . The crucifixion painting also comes from the previous church. A foundation from Pommelter Bürger is the sandstone, baroque font on which the names of the donors are recorded. The two-manual organ with twelve stops on the west gallery, created in 1871 by the Magdeburg organ builder Carl Böttcher , is no longer playable. Until 1917, the ringing consisted of two bells, only one of which now hangs in the tower. The second bell was melted down in each of the two world wars .

Pastor

From 1827 to 1845, the rationalist pastor Leberecht Uhlich, known as the founder of the “ Friends of Light ” ( Association of Protestant Friends ), worked at the church.
