St. Lioba Church

The St. Lioba Church is a Catholic church in the Käfertal district of Mannheim . It was built between 1960 and 1961 according to the plans of the architects Richard Jörg and Herbert Zinser .

history

From 1931 the Speckweg settlement was built between Käfertal, Waldhof and Gartenstadt, followed by the Kuhbuckelsiedlung to the north. The pastors of the Waldhöfer St. Franziskus Church and the Käfertaler St. Laurentius Church were partly responsible for the pastoral care of the Catholic residents . After the Second World War , the population grew rapidly, so that in 1950 preparations for the establishment of a parish began. In 1957 Archbishop Eugen Seiterich established the parish curate of St. Lioba . Initially, a room in the community's own kindergarten was used for the services.

In 1960 the construction of the church began. The following year she was finished and benediziert and Auxiliary Bishop on July 8, 1962 Karl Gnädinger consecrated . In 1969 Archbishop Hermann Schäufele raised St. Lioba to an independent parish . In 2002 the parishes of St. Lioba, St. Elisabeth and St. Franziskus were merged to form the pastoral care unit Mannheim-Waldhof-Gartenstadt.

description

Front view

The St. Lioba Church was built far back in favor of a forecourt on Speckweg, a busy street. Despite its progressive architecture at the time of construction, its relatively low height blends in with the settlement, which mainly consists of two-story residential buildings.

The guidelines of the Archdiocese of Freiburg , which prescribed a nave , had only recently been relaxed . The floor plan is based on a transverse rectangle, while the interior is built on concentric circles. The radial seating surrounds the circular sanctuary at an angle of 165 degrees, anticipating the demands of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . The effect towards the center is enhanced by the flat cylinder roof with a skylight band over the altar . The concrete glass windows were designed by the Ludwigshafen artist Ernst W. Kunz .

The massive bell tower stands a little apart from the church. The ring consists of five bells. They were cast in 1992 and first rang the bell at the Katholikentag in Karlsruhe before they were brought to St. Lioba.

Church life

The last weekend in September is dedicated to the parish festival - called the Family Festival .

The children and young people of St. Lioba can get involved with the acolytes or the boy scouts, graduated according to age.

There is also a church choir, a group of the elderly, the women's community, a KAB group, children's gymnastics and other activities.

St. Lioba operates a partnership with St. Thérèse in Toulon, France, which has existed for more than 50 years and is renewed again and again through annual visits - mostly around Ascension Day.

St. Lioba also has a kindergarten with a crèche.
