The Catholic Church of St. Martinus in Sontheim , a district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg , is the oldest church in the town and at the same time marks the historic center of Sontheim. The church still has a Gothic choir , the nave was replaced in 1904 by a new building in the neo-Romanesque style .

history

The church is located in the historic center of Sontheim and its origins can be traced back to the establishment of a settlement in Franconian times. From the 13th century, the Teutonic Order had possession in Sontheim and exercised local rule there. The church and the adjacent Sontheimer Deutschordenshof were walled in after the Peasants' War in 1525. The ring walls of the complex were demolished in 1840, whereby some remains of the ring wall and a belfry stone dated 1539, bearing the names and coats of arms of Walther von Cronberg , Eberhart von Ehingen , Komtur Wilhelm Lochinger and order builder Kaspar Haberkorn, have been preserved and then in the western staircase have been inserted.

The oldest part of the church, the choir , dates back to the Gothic period . In 1715 the church, which was then in poor condition, burned down after a lightning strike and was rebuilt in the early Baroque style under Commander Georg Adolf von Speth-Schülzburg in 1719/20. Speth also had the Teutonic Order Summer House in Sontheim and the baroque side portal built in the Teutonic Order Minster of St. Peter and Paul in the small Deutschhof in Heilbronn .

At the staircase to the church from the west, the year 1708 is written on the outer wall with the following letters:

C (laudius) F (tolerance) J (osef) F (reiherr) R (single axis) R (at) D (s) B (allei) F (entwine) C (omtur) Z (u) H (eilbronn) T ( eutsch) O (rdens) R (itter)

The painter J. Baptist Feratini created three frescos in St. Martin's Church in 1748.

In 1904/1905 the church building was rebuilt according to plans by Ulrich Pohlhammer . The Gothic choir and the baroque tower built in the 18th century were retained, while the nave was renovated as a basilica in the neo-Romanesque style. The foundation stone for the new nave was laid on April 24, 1904. The Munich painter Gebhard Fugel created the original painting of the new nave.

The old bells of the church were melted down during World War I. In 1921/23 new bells cast at the Bachert bell foundry in Kochendorf were procured, but as early as 1930 they were traded in for new bells cast at Wohlfarth in Lauingen. The new bells did not last long either: as early as 1942 they were melted down again for armament purposes. The bell bought after the Second World War was the fourth in just a few decades.

After the Second World War, the church was renovated. In 1952 she received new glass windows from Wilhelm Geyer . The old painting was whitewashed. The interior is now painted in one color.
