history

The first documentary mention dates from December 20, 1293 . At that time it was probably a Romanesque hall building with a retracted choir . Towards the end of the 13th century, the choir and the crypt under the eastern yoke were extended and the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style as a two-aisled hall church. The ribbed vault was supported by three octagonal pillars . The church tower is 83.5 m high.

From 1739 to 1742 a third nave was added to the church on the south side , as the Niedercunnersdorf parish now also belonged to the Nikolaikirche. In addition, the west tower was built.

As a result of the restoration in 1884/1885 by Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel , the church lost its valuable interior. Among other things, the galleries decorated by five columns have been lost since then.

In 1933/1934 the Dresden architect Carl Richter redesigned the chancel, the organ and the pulpit. Further renovation measures were carried out in the 1980s.

altar

The stone altar dedicated to the eleven virgins was replaced by a new one in 1885, the steps, table and back wall of which are made of sandstone . The top made of oak wood shows the Last Supper and was designed based on the model of the altar of the St. Jacobi Church in Neustadt in Saxony .

organ

The first organ was installed in 1520. In 1615 a new organ was made for 1000 thalers , which was replaced in 1884. In 1935 the organ was given an electropneumatic action as part of extensive renovation work . Since this organ was also badly worn out, a new organ was built in 1992, whereby some parts of the old organ could be reused.
