St. Andreas (Rudolstadt)
The Stadtkirche St. Andreas is the Protestant church of the city of Rudolstadt in Thuringia .
history
The town church of St. Andreas is a three-aisled late Gothic hall church. It was built between 1463 and 1475 by converting a church from the 12th century.
In the years 1634 to 1636 the church was rebuilt again. It was given an early baroque interior design that shapes the image of the church that still exists today.
Furnishing
The family tree of Count Albrecht VII von Schwarzburg and the “Schönfeld epitaph ” , which is depicted as high as a wall, are worth seeing .
In the choir a grave plate at Countess Catherine of Schwarzenburg, with her famous phrase "Prince Blood for ox blood" in recalls Schmalkaldic War confronted (1547) Duke of Alba and the "heroic Catherine" became known as the story.
In the church there is a princely crypt , which consists of two rooms and has been in use since 1605. Here lie some coffins of the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ; the others were originally located in the castle church in Schwarzburg and were transferred to Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt during the Nazi era . The crypt suffered a series of break-ins and the coffins are badly damaged (similar to the crypt in Wöhlsdorf near Ranis ). The coffin of the last Princess Anna-Luise von Schwarzburg (1871–1951) is also located here.

Bells
The late Gothic bell Osanna, cast in 1499, hangs in the upper belfry of the tower . It was cast by Kurt Kerstan in 1499 and weighs 2,300 kilograms. Legend has it that Friedrich Schiller, after climbing the tower in 1788, received the inspiration for one of his most famous poems - the " Song of the Bell " - from its inscription . The bell inscription reads: "Vivos voco, Mortuos plango, Fulgura frango." ( "I call the living, I lament the dead, I break lightning." )
The "Big Bell", cast in 1635 by the Möhringk brothers from Erfurt in the middle of the Thirty Years War, weighs 5,000 kilograms and is the heaviest free-swinging bell in a Protestant church in Thuringia. A gun barrel from Count Heinrich von Schwarzburg's armory was also used to cast the bell.
The Marienglocke or children's teaching bell is the oldest in the ringing of the town church. It dates from the 14th century and is a highly Gothic work of art. At 460 kilograms it is the lightest in the peal.
