St. Antonius (Obfelden)
The St. Antonius Church is the Roman Catholic church in Obfelden in the canton of Zurich . It is at Bachstrasse 18 . The associated pastoral care office is responsible for the towns of Obfelden and Ottenbach ZH .
history
History and naming
From the Middle Ages until 1847, the five villages that together made up Obfelden belonged to Ottenbach. Decisive for the establishment of the new community Obfelden was the industrial development of the place, namely through the cotton and silk factory of Rudolf Stehli-Hausheer. In 1847 Ferdinand Stadler provided the plans for the building of the Reformed Church. The Catholic working-class families who immigrated to Obfelden and Ottenbach from the central Swiss cantons initially moved to the nearby Aargau parishes in Merenschwand and Jonen . In 1887 a Catholic mission station was opened in Affoltern am Albis , which was also responsible for the Catholics from Obfelden and Ottenbach. The parish of St. Joseph emerged from this mission station in 1891 .
Development and construction history
Until well into the 20th century, the Catholics of Obfelden and Ottenbach were looked after by the pastors of the parish of St. Josef Affoltern. Only during the years 1943 to 1946 was Obfelden cared for by the Mettmenstetten parish , then handed back to Affoltern. The believers had to travel to Affoltern for the services. In 1947 the pastor of Affoltern founded a church building fund for Obfelden, which was raised in the following years through donations and begging letter campaigns. In 1955, a building site was purchased on Bachstrasse in Obfelden for the construction of the later St. Antonius Church. In 1963 the construction plan for an emergency church in Obfelden was commissioned. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 9, 1964 . The church was built according to the model of the emergency church in Elgg ZH . The emergency church was deliberately set up on the northern edge of the building site so that there was still space for later developments. On June 27, 1965, the church was consecrated by Vicar General Alfred Teobaldi on behalf of the Diocesan Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach . In the 1980s, a parish center was built next to the Antoniuskirche, which is structurally designed so that a new building of the Antoniuskirche would be possible. However, since there is enough space in the Antoniuskirche, the church was not rebuilt. In the 2010s the Antoniuskirche was renewed inside. Obfelden has remained part of the Affoltern parish to this day (as of 2014).
The pastoral care office St. Antonius in Obfelden is responsible for the places Obfelden and Ottenbach. Under canon law, the two parishes belong to the parish of Affoltern, where the parish church of St. Joseph is located. The parish Affoltern with the political communities Affoltern, Aeugst am Albis , Hedingen , Obfelden and Ottenbach is one of the larger Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich with its 6661 members (as of 2017).
Building description
Church tower and exterior
The St. Anthony's Church is located on the river road and is not due to its location on the road faces east , but shows in a northeasterly direction. The church has a floor area of 25 by 12 meters and is a rectangular building. A solid wooden structure with a slightly rising gable roof was built on brick pillars. On the right side of the church is a free-standing concrete tower with three bells hanging from it. These were cast in 1965 by the H. Rüetschi bell foundry , Aarau and consecrated on June 12, 1965 by Vicar General Teobaldi. The believer enters the church under a canopy.

Interior and artistic equipment
The St. Antonius Church is a longitudinal building on whose benches can seat 220 people. The whole building is oriented towards the chancel, which is visually underlined by the gray wooden beams on the side walls and the roof. Since the renovation in the 2010s, the sanctuary has been furnished by the Frick joinery, Obfelden. The furniture is anthracite-colored and forms a contrast to the yellow wall surface behind the baptismal font and the Easter candle on the left side of the altar as well as the blue wall surface on the right, where the statue of Our Lady is located. Behind the Mother of God is the sacristy attached to the church . The equipment is completed by a crucifix , which is located on the back wall of the sanctuary above the altar . A final witness of the previous interior is the font that was placed in front of the church. It bears a saying from Galatians: "For since you were baptized into Christ, you put on Christ."
organ
On May 7, 1972 the organ was consecrated by Vicar General Hans Henny. It is an instrument made by the organ builder Peter Ebell, Kappel am Albis . The mechanical instrument has two manuals with six registers and an attached pedal.
