Alfred Teobaldi

Alfred Teobaldi (born October 31, 1897 in Zurich ; † August 26, 1977 there ) was a Swiss theologian and the first vicar general in Zurich. Through his varied social- charitable , theological-pedagogical and church-political activities, he shaped the development of the Catholic Church in the canton of Zurich .

life and work

He was the son of a Piedmontese railway worker and trader as well as a Graubünden, from Bosco / Gurin . After attending the Disentis monastery school , he studied at the Chur seminary and was ordained a priest in 1920 . After further studies in Freiburg , Paris and Münster , he received his doctorate in political science in 1923 . From 1923 to 1938 he was Vicar of St. Anton Zurich-Hottingen and President of the Zurich Journeyman's Association, from 1923 head of the Wolfbach Journeyman's House, from 1926 President of the Zurich Cantonal Association of the Swiss Catholic People's Association and a member of its central committee. Between 1935 and his death in 1977, Alfred Teobaldi worked part-time as a pastor in the Burghölzli Psychiatric Polyclinic , in the Regensdorf Prison and in the Zurich District Prison. In addition, he was responsible for youth and educational work in the Catholic youth secretariat from 1937 to 1941 and was pastor at the Montana boys' institute on the Zugerberg as well as in the Walterswil boarding school in Baar and in the children's home Lattenberg ob Stäfa until his death .

In the 1930s, Alfred Teobaldi published various articles on the labor issue and apprentice protection from a Christian-social perspective. In the early 1960s, he made a petition in the Vatican that the use of grape juice instead of the mass wine would be permitted in exceptional cases. In addition, he campaigned for the reintroduction of the permanent diaconate before the Second Vatican Council . His work was published posthumously: Catholics in the Canton of Zurich .

Alfred Teobaldi founded and initiated the following Catholic church institutions:

Alfred Teobaldi was appointed episcopal commissioner by the bishop in Chur , Christian Caminada , from 1951 to 1956 and was the first vicar general of the canton of Zurich from 1956 to 1969. In 1964 he was appointed canon in Chur by Bishop Johannes Vonderach . Alfred Teobaldi was the driving force in Zurich for the recognition of the Catholic Church under state church law in 1963. Between 1963 and 1967 he was a member of the Central Commission of the Catholic Church of the Canton of Zurich.

The Zurich writer Kurt Guggenheim set Alfred Teobaldi in his novel All in all in the figure of the pastor of the house owner as a well-known, formative personality.
