St. Augustine (Wiesbach)
The Church of St. Augustinus is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Trier diocese in Wiesbach , a district of Eppelborn in the Neunkirchen district . It bears the patronage of Saint Augustine of Hippo and is considered an outstanding building of brutalism in Saarland .
history
Wiesbach owned a church building long before today's parish church. Due to the strong population growth after the Second World War, the old parish church became too small and in 1959 the foundation stone for today's parish church of St. Augustine was laid. After almost four years of construction, the striking building, which was built according to the plans of the architects Albert Dietz and Bernhard Grothe from Saarbrücken , was consecrated in 1963 .
Building description
The church building rises above a trapezoidal floor plan, the short base of which forms the altar wall. In front of it is a 39 m high rectangular church tower, which ends flat at the top. The outside of the church is painted white and is only structured by stone-gray exposed concrete fields. The northern outer wall folds into six large risalits , which are filled with colorful concrete glass windows along their entire height. The windows were designed by the artist Boris Kleint, who designed similar windows for the Saarbrücken churches of St. Pius, St. Paulus and St. Mauritius , also planned by Dietz & Grothe .
The interior of the church is quite sober except for the stained glass windows and is closed off by a flat ceiling. There is also a spacious organ gallery above the portals.
organ
The organ of St. Augustine is older than the church itself and was built in 1951 for the old church by the company Gebr. Späth as opus 559. The instrument originally had 11 stops on two manuals and pedal as well as electro-pneumatic cone chests .
After the construction of the new parish church, the organ was temporarily moved to the new church in 1963 and, in 1970, expanded to the present 19 registers by Hugo Mayer . In the course of this reconstruction, the present organ case was also built by Mayer.
