The parish church of St. Augustine is located in Damaschkestrasse and was consecrated in 1955. The parishes of St. Augustinus and St. Franz Xaver were merged to form the Parish Association Trudering - St. Augustinus and St. Franz Xaver .

History of the parish and parish center

St. Augustine is a very young parish, it was established in 1931. The first church in the area was a field chapel built in 1899 (now: War Memorial Chapel on Corinthstrasse). Due to the high level of settlement activity in today's parish after the First World War, the field chapel, where Sunday services have been regularly celebrated since 1923, soon became too small, and the desire for a larger church and its own pastoral care office grew. In 1931 an emergency church, a simple wooden structure with 120 seats and 280 standing places, was finally built and consecrated on November 22, 1931. On November 1, 1931, the St. Augustine Curate was opened in Trudering-Süd.

At the end of 1934 the pastoral care district, which was subordinated to the parish of St. Peter and Paul in 1932, gained its independence. A short time later, the St. Franz-Xaver branch and other parts of the area were added. The years of the Second World War prevented the construction of a new church, for which plans by Prof. Döllgast were already available.
In 1949 St. Augustine and its 6,000 parishioners were elevated to the status of a city parish. The growing shortage of space gave rise to the desire for a new church, for which the building permit was obtained in 1954. Planning and implementation were in the hands of cathedral builder Georg Berlinger . The shell was already in place at the end of 1954, and on August 28, 1955, the new Augustinus Church was opened by HH Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Johannes Neuhäusler to be consecrated. On August 1, 1959, the previous St. Franz-Xaver branch was separated from the St. Augustine parish, which now numbered around 10,000 Catholics, and made an independent pastoral care district.

The consecration of the new parish home in 1963, the opening of the parish kindergarten on January 1, 1966 and the construction of the sacristan's apartment in 1971 finally completed the St. Augustine parish center. After only 15 years of existence, the parish home had to be rebuilt due to a fire in 1978. In 1993 the six-year planning work began for a comprehensive renovation and redesign of the church. The parish church has shone in new splendor since September 2001, and in 2003 the newly designed church forecourt was inaugurated.
Today there are around 5,000 Catholics in the parish of St. Augustine.

Exterior construction

The Augustinus Church is oriented to the east and represents a simple, clearly structured modern hall structure, as it is characteristic of places of worship from the 1950s. The rectangular, compact tower has a footprint of 7 × 9 m and is closed by a flat, protruding metal roof. Due to the flight safety of the machines taking off and landing in Riem, no final cross was allowed to be attached to the tower. A tower cross was only recently installed on the north side. Above the large dials of the clock is the bell chamber with three (west / east side) and two (north / south side) sound openings.

The dimensions of the church:

  • Length: 45 m
  • Width: 22 m
  • Height: 15 m
  • Tower height: 26 m (with cross 32 m)

The Augustine relief in the west facade was created in 1958 by the artist Siegfried Moroder.

inner space

inner space

The current appearance of the spacious interior is essentially shaped by the renovation and redesign in the years 1999–2001. The most important places of liturgical events were arranged on the central axis: in the entrance area the baptismal font, on the steps to the presbytery the ambo and finally the celebration altar.

The baptismal font in the entrance area makes it clear that baptism is the initial sacrament through which the newly baptized Christian is accepted into the church as the community of believers. There are two openings in the stone: a device for drawing off the consecrated water is integrated in one and the consecrated oils are kept in the other.

The Easter candlestick with the Easter candle stands next to the place of baptism outside of Easter time. It symbolizes Christ, the risen Lord who instituted baptism.

The new celebratory altar was made from Solnhofer Jurastein and contains relics of Blessed Kaspar Stanggassinger.

The mighty, 4.20 meter high and 21 hundredweight triumphal cross on the wall of the presbytery dominates the space. Like the Augustine relief on the west facade, it was created by the artist Siegfried Moroder, who comes from Val Gardena. The cross is framed by eight scenes from the life of the patron saint Augustine, designed in sgraffito style - an ornamental picture font. The Way of the Cross presents itself in the same style. The figures of the Mother of God (1956) and St. Joseph (1957) - both depicted with the baby Jesus - also come from the sculptor Siegfried Moroder.

The tabernacle is a work of the Munich goldsmith Max Oloff from 1955.

In a niche to the right of the main entrance there is a rounded object made of wood, which at first glance appears unusual: it is a confessional and discussion room that was set up in addition to the existing confessionals.

organ

On the west gallery is the large main organ with its 41 sounding stops , which was built in 1965 by the Munich organ builder Carl Schuster. Due to the disposition and the tonal appearance, the organ is predestined for the symphonic repertoire of German Romanticism. In the course of the most recent church renovation, the instrument was completely refurbished.

Bells

Augustine bell

In the spacious bell room there is a powerful, clay-deep bell, which consists of a total of seven bells . These were cast by Karl Czudnochowsky in a tin-free bronze alloy (“Euphon”) and together form one of the largest bells from the Erdinger foundry's workshop. The Monika bell was taken over from the tower of the emergency church in the bells of the new parish church, but the former Michael's bell (des 2 ) was melted down and used to cast the Joseph's bell . The two large bells were cast on March 22, 1955, the other four were made a few days later on April 1. The new bells could already be consecrated on April 17, 1955. The total costs for the bell cage and cast amounted to 56,000 DM. There is a richly differentiated ringing order that uses the musical potential of the bell.

General renovation of the kindergarten

After the kindergarten had not received any major renovations since it opened in 1966, the kindergarten was moved to the former sacristan's house and in containers on July 24, 2010. In the course of a general renovation, which will last until the beginning of the kindergarten year 2012/13, the kindergarten was given a room for a crèche. In addition, u. a. all rooms, the playground and the exterior facade of the building were renewed.
