The Catholic branch church of St. Bartholomew in Maising , a district of the municipality of Pöcking in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg , essentially dates back to the late Middle Ages. During the renovation in the 1970s, late Romanesque frescoes were discovered in the choir and exposed again.

history

A church in Maising is mentioned in a deed of donation from 1182. This church building could be today's choir, to which the nave was added later . Much of the church burned down during the Thirty Years War and was rebuilt afterwards. In the 19th century the church was enlarged and after the Second World War the equipment was modernized . The old, mostly baroque furnishings were removed and the church received new altars. A baroque Madonna was sold to the then local museum in Starnberg . During the thorough renovation between 1978 and 1982, late Romanesque frescoes came to light, which are dated to the 13th century. As part of this restoration, the new altars were removed and some of the original sculptures could be put back in the church.

architecture

The church is designed as a hall building, to which a recessed, rectangular choir adjoins in the east. In front of the west facade is the bell tower, which is crowned by a high, pointed helmet. The nave is spanned by a grooved flat ceiling.

Frescoes

The frescoes, which were uncovered on the front wall of the choir, probably represent stations on a way of the cross . The individual scenes are framed above and below by an ornamental band with foliage.

Furnishing

Madonna and Child
  • The oldest sculptures in the church date from the early 16th century, such as the figures of the apostle Peter , St. Catherine and St. Barbara .
  • Today the altar leaves from the previous altars hang in the choir . On the two paintings on the north side, St. Leonhard and the Apostle Bartholomew , the patron saint of the church, are shown with his attribute , the knife. The picture depicting a Madonna and Child on the south wall bears the signature of Wilhelm Hauschild (1827–1887) and is marked with the year 1857.
