The Catholic parish church of St. Bernhard is a listed church building in Welver , a municipality in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was built around 1700 as the monastery church of the Cistercian convent Welver .

History and architecture

The former monastery church is a plastered hall of two bays with a choir in the 5/8 end . The west tower under a curly hood is set. The building was built between 1697 and 1707 as a new building north of the old, now Protestant church of St. Albanus and Cyriakus . The elevation to the parish church took place in 1809.

The walls are divided by stepped buttresses and arched windows over oculi . The arched portal on the north side is walled up, the portal on the south side has a segmented arch and is decorated with volutes . In the interior, ribbed vaults rest on consoles. The former nuns gallery is located in the western yoke . The walled-up entrance from the enclosure to the gallery shows the coat of arms of the former abbess of Aldenbruck and is marked 1700.

Furnishing

The richly carved baroque furnishings were restored in 1968 and from 2003 to 2008, exposing and adding to the original version .

Main altar

The main altar with twisted columns and pediments is equipped with life-size sculptures of Jesus and Mary, and the founder of the order Robert des Molesme, as well as Bernard von Clairvaux . In the center there is a painted crucifixion scene, on the upper floor there is a picture of the Trinity. Laterally from the tabernacle are Cherubim -Wächterengel arranged. The altar is crowned by a figure of the Archangel Michael fighting with the defeated Lucifer . The altar was probably built in the workshop of E. V. Averdunck.

Side altar

The side altar with flanking columns was donated by Abbess Catharina Gertrudis von Bischopinck (1706–1733). It was probably made in the Averdunck workshop. According to its subordinate function compared to the main altar, it was designed as a simple portal altar. The side frame is decorated with flower garlands and a carved bar. The altarpiece shows a representation of Mary, on the gable there is a sculpture of St.  Elisabeth of Thuringia , flanked by sculptures by Abbess Gertrund the Great from Hellfta and Catherine of Alexandria.

pulpit

The pulpit , like the two altars, is marked on the underside with 1714 and belongs to the initial furnishing of the choir room. It is hung on the wall opposite the side altar and is accessed via the staircase with a parapet. The parapet is richly decorated with fruit hangings and the top of the canopy is decorated with golden grapes. The pulpit shows the four evangelists, the top of the canopy above the sound cover is decorated with a figure of Johannes d. T. crowned.

organ

The organ is on the former nuns gallery. According to old stock records, it was built around 1758. The instrument was renewed in 1986 by the organ builder Gebrüder Stockmann . From the original organ only the organ prospectus and the historical manual case were preserved and redesigned by a restoration company from Lippstadt. Stockmann designed and manufactured the technical organ , the pipes, the keyboard and the pedals. The color of the pedals was matched to the historical manual housing.
