history

Schaufenberg never had its own church and always belonged to the parish of Ratheim . Around 1900 there were efforts in the neighboring town of Millich to have its own church, but they were not pursued any further. With the opening of the Sophia-Jacoba colliery , the population of Schaufenberg quadrupled between 1921 and 1931. For this reason, an emergency church was set up in a barn in 1926 , in which services could now be held. In addition, on January 1, 1939, Millich and Schaufenberg were combined to form a separate pastoral care district with its own priest. Formally, however, both places still belonged to the parish of Ratheim. On October 1, 1955, the pastoral care district was granted financial independence; since April 1, 1969, Schaufenberg and Millich have been an independent parish .

Building history

The in the 1926 emergency church was founded on November 7, 1929 benediziert . In 1944 the National Socialists confiscated the emergency church and used it as accommodation for digging workers. Only in 1946 could the church be used again for church services. Since the emergency church no longer met the demands of the community, it was decided to build the current parish church.

St. Bonifatius was built between 1955 and 1956 according to plans by the Wassenberg architect Wilhelm Andermahr . The solemn church consecration took place on September 16, 1956. The planned bell tower has not yet been built.

Due to austerity measures by the diocese of Aachen and the process of "Church Real Estate Management (KIM)", the Schaufenberg parish church was withdrawn from the diocese's funding. The parish decided to convert St. Boniface into a Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The last service in the church took place on Easter Monday, March 28, 2016, during which the Eternal Light was extinguished. Between 2016 and 2018 the interior of the church was converted into a Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the exterior remained unchanged. The Aachen architects Paulssen & Schlimm created the plans . Burials have been in the church since the end of 2018.
