Hans Mennekes
Hans Mennekes (born October 31, 1911 in Weeze ; † June 9, 1983 in Weeze) was a German artist .
Life
Mennekes was the oldest of four brothers in a Weezer family. From 1926 to 1929 he learned glass painting in the workshop of Hein Derix from Kevelaer . He then attended the arts and crafts school in Krefeld , where he also met other glass painters (including Heinrich Campendonk , Wilhelm Teuwen and Georg Meistermann ). The Second World War hit the family hard, and all brothers were drafted into military service. One of the brothers went missing, one lost a leg and Hans Mennekes himself lost his left arm in fighting near the Russian Oryol . Undeterred, Mennekes continued his artistic activity after the war. He spent a large part of his creative time in a studio at Schloss Wissen , and later had his own studio in his home in Weeze.
