history

It is not known when exactly there was a church in Kleingladbach. A church is mentioned for the first time in the visitation protocols of the Duke of Jülich from the year 1550. Accordingly, the church was a curate chapel of the Wassenberg country dean. In addition, Kleingladbach was already an independent parish and the church was also the local parish church . Until 1851, Golkrath also belonged to the parish as a branch, but was then separated from Kleingladbach and also made a parish. Houverath was also a subsidiary of Kleingladbach and was granted financial independence in 1911, but formally remained part of the Kleingladbach parish until 1915. Both Golkrath and Hoeverath belong today to the large parish Chirstkönig Erkelenz.

Between 1804 and 1825 Kleingladbach belonged to the newly founded diocese of Aachen . Before that, the parish belonged to the Diocese of Liège and from 1825 to 1930 to the Archdiocese of Cologne . Since 1930 Kleingladbach has been part of the Aachen diocese again.

Building history

The origins of the church are in the dark. Today's church goes back to a gothic hall church built in the 15th century , of which the choir and today's central nave are still preserved. In the 17th century the church became too small and the two aisles were added. At the end of the 19th century, Kleingladbach's population had grown so much that an expansion of the parish church was necessary. The planning for the expansion was in the hands of the Neuss government master builder Julius Busch . The medieval tower was demolished and the nave was extended to the west by a fifth yoke and a new bell tower was built. In 1902 the construction work was completed.

Due to mountain damage , the church had to be closed in 1972 due to the risk of collapse. After a comprehensive safeguarding, the parish church could be used again from November 1973. In 1984 the building was given a new sacristy based on plans by Heinrich Lennartz and in 1989 the historic painting from the 19th century was partially exposed during the renovation of the interior.

Building description

St. Stephanus is a three-aisled and five-bay Gothic- Baroque hall church with a five-sided closed choir in the east and a five - storey neo - Gothic tower with an eight-sided dome in the west. The interior is vaulted with ribbed vaults .

Furnishing

In the interior there is a neo-Gothic high altar in the choir from the mid-19th century and in the side aisles two neo-Gothic side altars from 1848. The celebration altar was made up of the old communion bench from the 19th century. The brightly painted figures of saints come from the same time. The font is a baroque work from 1763. The 14 stations of the cross date from the middle of the 19th century. Due to the taste of the times, they were removed in 1953 and replaced by a modern way of the cross by the artist Peter Haak. The old stations were given away to a community in the Eifel . Since 1994 the old stations of the cross have been in the parish church again, the modern ones have been removed. The painting of the 19th century, which has been partially preserved and added in 1989 according to findings, is also worth seeing.

The church only has an electronic organ . The stained glass windows designed Wilhelm de Graaff in the 1950s.
