The church building is located north of Hückelhoven city center in the miners' settlement "Auf dem Hansberg" on the corner of Bauerstrasse and Brassertstrasse.

history

With the development of the hard coal deposits in Hückelhoven since the First World War and the opening of the Sophia-Jacoba colliery in 1914, the population of Hückelhoven increased rapidly. Since the parish church of St. Lambertus could no longer grasp the number of believers, the Cologne vicariate commissioned the pastor of St. Lambertus to organize the construction of a second church for Hückelhoven.

In 1932 construction of the church finally began. At the same time, the parish rectorate of St. Barbara was established, and in 1934 the new parish received its first cleric, Fritz Dinstühler. However, this was still subordinate to the pastor of St. Lambertus. St. Barbara only became completely independent of the mother parish when it was elevated to a parish on January 21, 1960. This independence was only to last 40 years. On January 1, 2010 the parish was dissolved and merged with the also dissolved parish of St. Lambertus to form the new parish of St. Lambertus and St. Barbara / Hückelhoven.

In the course of the austerity measures and the process of "church property management", the church was taken out of financing. The parish then decided to close St. Barbara. On September 25, 2016, the last Holy Mass took place in St. Barbara, at which the church was also profaned.

Building history

Although the Vicariate General asked the Hückelhoven pastor to have a second church built as early as 1928, it took until 1933 before construction could begin. This was also due to the difficult economic situation at the time, in which there was no money for a new church.

A competition was announced in 1932 for the planning of the church, among other things because of the expected mining damage, which made a special construction necessary. The Düsseldorf architect Hermann Schagen emerged from the competition and immediately began designing it. The groundbreaking ceremony was on February 19, 1933, the foundation stone was laid on June 25, 1933 and the church was completed by the end of 1933, so that Christmas services could already be celebrated in the new church. The solemn church consecration finally took place on July 10, 1934.

The Second World War left only relatively minor damage from artillery fire, which could already be repaired in 1945.
