Parish Church of St. Elisabeth

The Catholic parish church of St. Elisabeth is a characteristic church building in Bergkamen , in the Unna district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The congregation became independent on October 7, 1903 with the introduction of a pastor, who was called the administrator of the missionary vicariate in the linguistic usage at the time . The vicariate belonged to the parish of Kamen and did not have its own asset management. Until 1907, a hall in an inn on Töddinghauser Strasse served as an emergency church. The bell hung several hundred yards away on a rack by the old school. In 1910 the community was elevated to a branch parish with its own asset management. The vicar was appointed parish vicar. The branch parish was converted into an independent parish in 1921. The Bergkamen Pastoral Association was formed on September 1, 2011.

Predecessor church

The first church was built in 1907 according to plans by the diocesan master builder Arnold Güldenpfennig . It was almost completely set up by the beginning of the First World War . A communion bench was purchased in 1910 and the benches in the side aisles in 1912. In 1913 the high altar, the baptismal font and the cafeteria were installed, the pulpit was built in 1914. The building was destroyed in World War II. Until 1958, services were celebrated in an emergency church on Wiehagen.

Today's church

The building was built from 1956 to 1957 according to plans by Otto Weicken , Unna, and consecrated in 1958 . The red clinker building is structured by perforated windows and covered with flat sloping roofs. In the middle of the gable end, a recessed white surface with a rose window is visible, in front of which vertical supports are freely placed.

The sanctuary is seven steps higher than the elongated nave, which is accompanied on the sides by low side aisles. The corridors end in the altar zone as rectangular chapels , the outer walls of which with inserted supports illuminate the sanctuary. A flat wooden ceiling was drawn into the interior. The tower rises above the left chapel, the windows in the side aisles, separated by round pillars, were designed by Wilhelm Rengshausen, Lünen; the glazing of the rectangular windows in the upper storey is the work of Wilhelm Buschulte , Unna.

Furnishing

  • The altar, the ambo and the sacrament stele were renewed in 1968 by Josef Baron .
  • The traditional organ front , a hanging cross and several details changed the impression of the earlier objectivity.
  • An organ with 39 registers and 2,891 pipes was built in 1993 by the Sauer company .
  • The chime consists of four steel bells that were cast by the Bochumer Verein ; 1957 the peace bell, the memorial bell and the Marienglocke and 1960 the Barbaraglocke.
