St. Gallus is the parish church of Unterschwarzach , a district of Bad Wurzach in the Ravensburg district . The ecclesiastical community is part of the Allgäu-Oberschwaben deanery in the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .

location

The church is located approximately in the center of the village near the bend of the K 8032 into the B 465. It is surrounded by a wall opposite the eastern road . In the immediate area of the church there used to be a cemetery , from which isolated graves still testify. To the northwest outside the former wall is the funeral hall , today's cemetery of the community and the war memorial .

Building

The east-facing square nave , in the form of a three-aisled nave, is seventeen meters long and fourteen meters high in external dimensions. The oldest part of the church is the western tower from the 13th century, on the central axis of the nave, completely integrated into the building. It was raised in its present form in 1715, with a gable roof on the face end. The bells are in the tower . The tower clock is located below the bells . The two dials are on the north and south sides of the tower. The choir and nave were rebuilt in the 16th century.

Furnishing

Ceiling frescoes

Four columns on both sides separate the steeper aisle from the flatter central nave. A baroque high altar is located within the choir, which is one step higher. In 1868 and 1884, neo-Gothic side altars from the Metz workshop in Gebrazhofen were added to the two baroque side altars that were already in existence at the time . These neo-Gothic altars were removed again in 1946. In its place there is a Pietà and on the other side a statue of Saint Anne.

In the same year Peter Paul Beyerle from Bad Waldsee frescoed the three central ceiling frescoes and the casein painting above the choir arch. The three frescoes by Beyerle deal with the early life of Jesus. The Annunciation of the Lord is shown on the first of the three frescoes . The middle fresco deals with the shepherds' adoration of the baby Jesus . The third fresco to the east shows the presentation of Jesus in the temple .

As part of the interior renovation in 1946, the early Baroque marbling on the altars was exposed again and the overpainting with gray-green paint was removed. The organ is on the top of the two galleries. The confessional is located under the northern staircase. There is a baroque pulpit in the church .

In 1999 the choir room was redesigned for a construction cost of 550,000 euros. The sculptor Rudolf Kurz from Ellwangen was won over for this redesign of the liturgical site. The people's altar, ambo, sedile and baptismal font are from his hand.
