The Church of St. Georg in Hoheim

The Church of St. Georg in Hoheim , Lower Franconia , a district of the district town of Kitzingen , is the local Catholic parish church. The church is on the so-called Kirchberg in the middle of the village. The church belongs to the dean's office in Kitzingen .

history

The village of Hoheim was first mentioned in a document in 1142. In 1390 the village came to the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach . A parish in the village was named as early as 1348. At that time the abbesses of the Benedictine monastery in Kitzingen held the right of patronage , the parish was incorporated into the monastery. In the 15th century the still existing choir with a cap vault was built.

Margrave Georg von Brandenburg-Ansbach introduced the Reformation in Hoheim around 1528 . The sacristy was built in the 16th century and has been preserved to this day. In 1629 the Würzburg bishopric bought back the village , which had been pledged in the 14th century, from the margraves and Prince-Bishop Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg pushed the Counter-Reformation in Hoheim. At this time the parish was being looked after by the chaplain from Kitzingen, the parish had gone down in the turmoil.

In the 18th century, the community was able to expand the nave of their church. On August 29, 1707, the Würzburg auxiliary bishop Johann Bernhard Mayer rededicated the church. From 1740 the community received new pastors. From then on the Capuchins from Kitzingen took care of the believers. On January 23, 1806, the Kitzingen Capuchin monastery was dissolved and Hoheim was looked after from Rödelsee from then on .

In the period that followed, Hoheim changed parishes several times. At first it was planned to incorporate the village into a so-called Prussian parish from the former property of the margraves . When this plan failed, the place came back to the Johannespfarrei in Kitzingen in 1816 . In 1832 the nave was expanded again, in 1854 the old sheet metal roof of the nave was replaced with bricks and the tower was raised.

Two foundations led to another revaluation of the Hoheim community. In 1859 the pastor Georg Joseph Ringelmann von Markt Bibart donated enough money to set up a local chaplaincy . A larger foundation made up of several brothers and sisters brought enough money for the community to establish a parish. It was established in 1909 by Prince Regent Luitpold . From 1987 Hoheim became part of the Vincent parish in Kitzingen. The church was renovated from 1958 to 1960, and the interior was renovated in 1986.

architecture

The oldest part of the church is the choir from the 15th century with a cap vault . The nave from the 18th century received a flat ceiling. The church has been changed in all epochs. Today the church presents itself as a hall building . The tower has four floors, which can also be recognized from the outside through cornices . He concludes with a pointed helmet. Two sandstone epitaphs from the 18th century were attached outside.

Furnishing

Bells

The ringing of St. George's Church consists of three bells. The oldest was created by an unknown Würzburg foundry and came to the church in the 18th century. The community probably had to give up several bells in the course of the meltdowns during the world wars. It was not until 1992 that the bell could be completed again.

Further equipment

The rest of the furnishings are mostly from the 19th century and can be classified as neo-Gothic . Both the three altars and the pulpit came into the church in 1832. In 1960 the Würzburg bishop Josef Stangl consecrated the new altar versus populum . It was made by Erwin Seitzer and has a large tabernacle console. Two figures of Saints Peter and Paul on the right and left from the 18th century come from the former monastery church in Kitzingen. The 1960s stained glass windows were created by the Würzburg artist Curd Lessing. The eight-sided baptismal font came into the church around 1700 . The brass chandelier with the double-headed eagle was also made at the same time. On the north wall of the nave there is a painting of St. Christopher from the 18th century. Another painting shows Christ on the cross .

The oldest furnishing element is a figure of the risen Christ. It was probably created in the 16th century at the time the church was built. 14 stations of the cross run through the nave. The organ has ten registers and was created by Barthel Brünner in 1748. In 1993 the Otto Hoffmann company from Ostheim vor der Rhön undertook a comprehensive renovation of the instrument.
