The St. Jakobus Church is the Catholic parish church in the Bavarian city of Miltenberg am Main . It is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder . The parish churches include St. Josef in the Breitendiel district, St. Katharina in Mainbullau and St. Vitus in Wenschdorf. The parish of St. Jakobus is part of the parish community of St. Martin. The parish belongs to the Deanery Miltenberg in the diocese of Würzburg .

Building

The church in its current classicist form is a three-aisled gallery pseudo - basilica with a three-sided apse, slate hipped roof and plastered masonry with sparing ashlar elements. It is essentially Gothic. A first church was built in the 13th century when Miltenberg was granted city rights . Towards the end of the 14th century a larger three-aisled building was built. In 1782 this building was declared dilapidated and plans were drawn up for a new building. The conversion to today's classical appearance took place in the 19th century: the choir flank towers with Welschen hoods and lanterns were built in 1829–31, the nave was rebuilt in 1830 and 1886, the choir in 1862. 1959 purified. A general renovation with redesign of the liturgical area was carried out in 2003/2004. The floor level was raised again and the steps in the choir room were changed. The altar was also positioned closer to the pews, for which a new altar island was built. The tabernacle has its own place on the side in a historic tabernacle.

Furnishing

If you enter the church in the main nave from the west, you are standing at the baptism site of the church. A shell basin from 1608, made by Michael Juncker, stands under the mighty chandelier . In the front part, the light-flooded choir is clearly set off from the darker nave. This directs one's gaze to the picture by Clemens Kaletsch , freely set up in 2004 , which is somewhat reminiscent of a classic winged altar in terms of structure. The picture, which is characterized by strong colors, can be optically changed by opening and closing it. In the lower front scene it shows the calling of James and John, who are busy with their father Zebedee at the fishing boat (Mk 1,19f.), In the center of the picture (Lk 8,51-54) and on the right (Lk 8,55) the miracle of the resurrection of the daughter of the synagogue ruler Jairus as well as the entrance scene in the garden of Gethsemane on the left (Mt 26, 36-38), and in the top center the request of the wife of Zebedee to Jesus for her two sons James and John to share in the kingdom of Jesus ( Mt 20.20f.) The seemingly fleeting figures act in a wide, diffuse, almost romantic landscape. A group of three kings, dated around 1400, is attached to the wall in the north aisle, while the two saints, St. Nepomuk and St. Jacob can be seen as Baroque figures in the south aisle. The pulpit by Zacharias Juncker the Elder, created in 1635, is striking. Ä. The outside of the aisles are surrounded by the Stations of the Cross by Thomas Buscher , created in 1927 , the colored versions of which were lost during the purification in 1959. In the devotional chapel in the north aisle the Madonna in a halo was created around 1400 and the altarpiece with seven scenes from the life of St. Maria from 1624, made of alabaster marble, worth seeing. In the north aisle chapel, in the south aisle, you can see a life-size cross, a work of red sandstone by Hans Backoffen from the late Gothic period.

organ

The organ goes back in part to an instrument that was built in 1699 by the organ builder Schleich. The organ case of this instrument is completely preserved. The organ was built in 2004 by the organ builder Vleugels (Hardheim), reusing 13 registers from the previous instrument, which was created in 1935 by the organ builder J. Bittner. The instrument is designed as a two manual work with main and swell movement . The registers of the swell mechanism are on twin drawers and can be registered on two manuals (solo and echo mechanism); the tremulant in the echo work, executed as a shock tremulant, is also effective for the solo work. Several registers of the main work are also on twin stores and can therefore be played on the pedal . The instrument has a total of 32 registers (2004 pipes ) and four transmissions in the pedal, playable on three manuals and pedal. The instrument also has a number of effect registers , including a. a trumpet angel that sounds a ship's horn when it is turned (so-called beaver boom ). The abrasive loading -instrument has mechanical Spieltrakturen and electrical Registertrakturen.
