Church of St. Johann in Riemsloh

The St. Johann Church is the Catholic church in the Riemsloh district of the city of Melle . The foundation stone for the new, enlarged church was laid on May 28, 1908. On March 15, 1910, the church was consecrated by Bishop Hubertus Voss . The church is consecrated to Saint John the Baptist .

History and architecture

The square west tower of the church was built in 1461/1462. Over the centuries the church has been enlarged again and again. The last major expansion took place between 1908 and 1909. During the excavation work, a tombstone was discovered under the floor of the old church, from which it emerges that there should have been a church with a burial place in Riemsloh as early as 1007. The architect of the last extension was Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann from Münster. The style of the extension is neo-Gothic .

The parish church is a single nave Gothic quarry stone building with three nave bays. The neo-Gothic eastern extension is connected to a transept and has a polygonal choir . A roof turret, a small tower, is attached over the crossing.

Furnishing

The sacrament house in late Gothic style, carved from white sandstone , was created in 1503.

The windows in the oldest part of the church date back to 1507. The two large windows in the transept and the three choir windows were made in 1908 in the workshop of the painter Heinrich Nüttgens .

In 1650 the church received a new pulpit, in 1661 the church seats. In 1678 a sacristy was added to the north side of the church , and in 1828 the morgue was removed on the south side. The crucifixion picture dates from around 1700. In 1896 a new tower clock was purchased.

The high altar was carved in 1908 by the sculptor Heinrich Seling, who came from Gesmold . The altarpiece was only gilded and polychromed after it was installed in the church . The altarpiece shows reliefs from the Old and New Testament. The Marien and Josef altars (both adorned with marble ) were also made in 1908 by the Thiesing art cabinet maker in Osnabrück . The full sculptures show Saint Mary, Bishop Friedrich and Saint Katharina, Saint Joseph, Emperor Heinrich II and Bishop Gerhard.

The medium and small bronze bells from 1559 were melted down during the First World War . (One of the two bells could no longer be used since 1874 because it had cracked.) They were cast in 1877 by the Petit & Edelbrock company in Gescher . The two bronze bells were replaced by three steel bells from the Bochumer Verein in 1922 . The so-called angelus bell from 1522 first had to be delivered during the Second World War , but came back and was hung up again in its old place. The bell bears the inscription “Maria, mater gratiae, mater misericordiae, tu nos ab hoste protege in hora mortis suscipe. Anno Domini MCCCCCXXII ".

In 1970 the choir was extensively renovated. The roof of the church was repaired between 1976 and 1978. The roof tiles were completely renewed and the roof structure partially renewed. In 1988 and 1989 the church was renovated and repainted.

In 2013 the exterior facade of the church was renewed.
