St. John the Baptist

The Evangelical Lutheran listed church of St. John the Baptist is in Ahlden , a town in the Heidekreis district in Lower Saxony . The church belongs to the parish of Walsrode the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover .

description

The first documented mention of a church was in 1202. An archdeacon from the diocese of Minden had his seat in Ahlden for a short time from 1274. The church was rebuilt between 1846 and 1848 by the church builder Ludwig Hellner instead of the previous building. The late Gothic church tower of the older mission church on the edge of the old river bed of the Aller from the 9th century, which dates from the medieval heyday of the archdeaconate, was merely increased in the course of the new building. The tower is covered with a slate-roofed helmet . A small bronze bell from 1520 hangs in it.

In addition to the tower, the new church got a rectangular late classical nave and a choir , which is widened and raised opposite the nave. The facade of the choir is characterized by the colossal order of the pilasters and triangular pediments . On the north and south sides of the choir there are two-story galleries on pillars in Doric order . The pulpit altar was moved here from Bühren, a district of the municipality of Binnen . In the hall of the tower there is a gravestone of Arnold Ludwig Haxthausen .
