The Church of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising in Taufkirchen near Munich . She bears the patronage of John the Baptist .

history

St. John the Baptist is a very old parish, the earliest recorded mention of which could be dated around 1150. Much of today's church building dates from this time, including the lower part of the church tower and the nave. This Romanesque church was Gothicized around 1500 and provided with appropriate fittings.

In 1738 the interior of the church, as in many places in Upper Bavaria, was redesigned in Baroque style and given its current appearance. The Gothic rib vault was replaced by a church ceiling richly decorated with stucco and frescoes . The windows were enlarged to flood the room with light. At the same time, the church tower was massively increased.

In 1970 the parish vicarie St. Georg was founded in the newly developed residential area Am Wald, which was declared a parish of St. Georg in 1975 when it was raised to the status of its own parish .

Building description

The parish church of St. John the Baptist is a so-called choir tower church , as the massive church tower with a pointed helmet rises above the choir. To the east of the church there is a small sacristy and to the west an anteroom through which the church is entered. The single-nave church is spanned by a wide baroque ceiling and closes off to the east with a small choir . In the west there is an organ gallery . The important pieces of equipment in the church include the three high altars and the pulpit.
