St. John the Baptist (Winklmoos)

The Roman Catholic side church St. John the Baptist (also called Bergkirche St. Johann or St. Johann im Gebirg ) on the Winklmoos-Alm near Reit im Winkl is a modern church building, which was built between 1963 and 1966 according to the plans of the Munich University professor Josef Wiedemann was established. The mountain church, which is at an altitude of around 1150  m above sea level. NN , belongs to the parish of St. Pankratius in Reit im Winkl and is registered as a monument with the number D-1-89-139-46 at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

The unconventionally designed, longitudinally rectangular facility with north-south orientation is enclosed by a wall made of boulders . The northern half of the complex is designed as a church space. The 16 meter long and 14 meter wide room is spanned by an open supporting structure made of wooden beams and has a steep, pent roof covered with bark shingles. The southern end wall facing the inner courtyard is completely glazed . On a stone stage on the north side of the sanctuary is the altar , the three sides of a simple, wooden pews is surrounded. The church offers around 90 seats.

On the opposite side of the inner courtyard there are auxiliary buildings such as the sacristy at the level of the surrounding wall. The entrance to the inner courtyard is on the east side under the bell beam, which is composed of steel profiles.

Bark huts of the woodworkers served as a model for the construction , which used to be found in large numbers in the surrounding mountainous landscape and served as dwelling for the summer . All building materials come from the municipality of Reit im Winkl, so that the construction in the 1960s could only be realized with the great commitment of numerous parishioners .
