The Sankt Josef Church is the Catholic church in Vöhrum , a district of the district town of Peine in Lower Saxony . A church in Vöhrum was first mentioned in documents in 1370. In the 16th century the Reformation was introduced in Vöhrum , and the residents and the Vöhrum church became Evangelical Lutheran . In 1543 the clergyman who was then in office in Vöhrum accepted the Lutheran faith.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics around Peine increased so much through the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich that a Catholic parish was formed in Vöhrum. Initially, the Catholics in Vöhrum belonged to the parish in Peine. Catholic church registers were kept in Vöhrum as early as 1946 . At the end of 1947, Vöhrum became the seat of a newly founded parish vicarie ; their services were initially held in the Protestant church. The first priest was Johannes Nögel.

At that time, in addition to Vöhrum, the villages of Eixe , Hämelerwald , Röhrse and Sievershausen also belonged to the catchment area of ​​the church.

Around 1990 St. Josef was an independent parish and had its own pastor. At that time, the Holy Trinity Church in Hämelerwald , built in 1962, was a branch church of the Vöhrum parish.

Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the parish "To the holy angels" in Peine, the independent parish "St. Josef ”in Vöhrum was canceled in this context. In the last few years before the merger, the church had already received pastoral care from Peine. The church has also been part of the Braunschweig deanery since November 1st, 2006. Before that she belonged to the Deanery Peine, which was dissolved at that time.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 66 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by the Paderborn architect Lipsmeier. Your entrance tower is crowned by a cross . Saint Joseph, the patron saint of the church, is shown in a bronze statue in front of the church. He is also shown on the windows on the street side.
