history

On January 25, 1885, the Liebfrauengemeinde in Linden opened the St. Josefs Hospital with 12 beds after a year of construction. Three nuns from the Order of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Vincent de Paul took care of the care. The first doctor at the hospital was the miners' surgeon and medical officer Ferdinand Krüger (1843–1915).

As early as 1893, the house, which had become too small, was extended to the west by six rooms and an operating room. The hospital now had 40 beds. A second operating room was built in 1899. In 1905 the north wing was added. The number of beds increased to 120. The chapel was built in 1909. In 1928 the south wing was added. The hospital was now able to accept 150 patients.

In 1951 the west wing was added. Furthermore, the old rectory from 1856 was connected to the hospital by a connecting wing. The Liebfrauengemeinde in Linden now had a modern hospital with 280 beds. With the addition of a second north wing in 1956, the number of hospital beds increased to 320. As part of the restructuring measures in the 1990s, the hospital had to give up some of its capacities and today only has 189 beds.

The clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics was opened in 1987 in its own building. Immediately adjacent, she has had her own horses and a stable for carrying out riding therapy measures since 2001.

From 1989 the house was taken over by Lutz Helmig and Bernard gr. Broermann, who later incorporated it into Asklepios Kliniken GmbH. When the two company founders separated and continued separate clinic groups, the house was transferred to the Helios Kliniken GmbH founded by Lutz Helmig , which has also been the main shareholder of the St. Josefs-Hospital GmbH since 1996. In the meantime, the former majority shareholder of Helios Kliniken GmbH, Lutz Helmig, has separated from his company and sold his shares to Fresenius ProServe GmbH .

A brisk construction activity began in 1989, and in 1993 a second south wing (operating theater and intensive care unit) was built. The hospital wards were also renovated.

From 2004 the St. Josefs-Hospital Bochum-Linden was integrated more and more into the regional structure of the Helios-Kliniken GmbH. For example, there has not been a separate central sterilization facility or kitchen since 2004. The house also lost more and more patients after 2004. From an average of 5,750 patients in the years 2000 to 2003 to just under 5,000 patients per year today. The number of employees also fell by around 20 percent, with the number of nurses being reduced by more than 30 percent.

Hartmut Masanek was the managing director until 2004. The current managing director is Francesco De Meo. From 1987 to 2009, Bernd van Husen was the chief physician of the KJP, and Andreas Richterich was his successor.
