Parish Church of St. Konrad

The parish church of St. Konrad in the municipality of Berkheim in the district of Biberach in Upper Swabia is under the patronage of the holy bishop Konrad von Konstanz , one of the two canonized bishops of the dissolved diocese of Konstanz . The community is part of the Rot-Iller pastoral care unit in the Biberach deanery of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese . The body of the patron saint of Illertal, Saint Willebold von Berkheim , has been laid out in a reliquary in the church since 1230 .

location

The church complex is located in the center of the village on Landesstraße 260 and is enclosed with a shoulder-high wall. The building ensemble consists of the old rectory, the parish hall and the cemetery. On the south side of the parish church there is a memorial for the fallen sons of the place in the two world wars. The rectory was built in 1529 by the Rot monastery and redesigned in Baroque style in the 17th century. It got its castle-like appearance from the four round corner towers that were added in the late 18th century. Until the secularization of 1803 Berkheim belonged as part of the spiritual territory of the former Premonstratensian imperial abbey in Rot an der Rot.

The Pfarrstadel St. Willebold was built in the 1990s.

history

The relics of the canonized Willebold von Berkheim had been resting in the previous church since he died in 1230. The tower of St. Konrad was built around 1713, the nave from 1785 to 1786. The chancel was expanded in 1876. The Haugg brothers from Ottobeuren painted the church in 1930.

The massive brick-built north-western tower from 1513 has a lily frieze and wall panels . There are several Tuscan wall pilasters in the nave . The frescoes were painted in 1930 by the Haugg brothers from Ottobeur. In the church there is a statue of Saint John the Baptist from around 1490.

The statue of St. Augustine was made around 1640 and is carved in the style of the Zürn workshop. The church has a high altar with an altar sheet, a people's altar , a pulpit , a gallery and pews, confessionals and an organ . The right side altar is a Joseph altar with a statue of Joseph with a baby Jesus, the left is an altar of Mary with an altar sheet.

Willeboldbrunnen

St. Willebold fountain by Josef Wehrle

The Willeboldbrunnen is located in front of the former Zehntstadel , now called Pfarrstadel. It was created by the artist Josef Wehrle, who was born in Memmingen . He was inspired by the pilgrim's biography and wrote: This pilgrim from abroad was in all probability not an intellectual theologian, not an eloquent preacher, but a person who lived from the depths of himself . Willebold, came by chance as a pilgrim from the Holy Land to Berkheim, where he met his inexplicable death.

The fountain figure of Willebold is dressed in the pilgrim's hat , which was included in the coat of arms of the community. He carries the pilgrim's staff in his right hand and a shell in his left. His gaze is directed forward. It gives the viewer the purposeful determination to stay true to his path.

In the lower part of the fountain column the four churches of Berkheim, Illerbachen, Eichenberg and Bonlanden are depicted on ships. The gushing water is supposed to represent the living church as a symbol.
