History and architecture

Previous building

The previous building was a memorial chapel from the 11th century. According to tradition, King Otto I held a court day at this point in 938 . This chapel was replaced by a small late Romanesque church around 1360 . A side aisle and a tower were added to this building at the end of the 15th century. The building was abandoned in 1872.

Today's church building

The three-aisled stone basilica was built from 1870 to 1873 according to plans by August Rincklake and under the construction management of Caspar Clemens Pickel . The building is in early Gothic forms on a cruciform floor plan. The built-in west tower was built instead of the originally planned two-tower facade. The centralizing east building with its massive, octagonal, domed crossing and a six-sided closing choir has a picturesque effect. The crossing roof turret is decorated with an imperial crown in memory of Emperor Otto.

After being destroyed in the Second World War, the building was partially rebuilt until 1948. From 1957 the church was completely renovated under the direction of the later diocesan master builder Eberhard Michael Kleffner. The church roof and the 63 meter high tower were re-covered. The Cologne sculptor Rudolf Peer was responsible for redesigning the interior. The interior walls were given a restrained color scheme. The new floor was laid in the colors Rosso and Verde antico in large panels and small mosaics . In 1973 the main entrance was redesigned with a tympanum in a pointed arch. The door leaves have 24 bronze reliefs showing scenes from the Bible. The windows were designed by Clemens Fischer. The refurbishment from 1968 to 1970 was carried out under the direction of the Cologne sculptor Rudolf Peer.

On January 18, 2018, the storm Friederike damaged the church tower. Above the western gable, on which one of the clock faces of the tower clock is located, the slate roof was damaged several meters. Shingles and wooden beams fell down, nobody was injured. Services were moved to other buildings.

Furnishing

The four bronze tablets of the stone altar represent the Eucharist as cena, cacrificium, memoria, and testamentum .

The high altar was equipped with a new tabernacle in the middle of the 20th century .

organ

The organ was built in 1874 by the organ builder Franz Wilhelm Sonreck (1822–1900). In 1906 the instrument was rebuilt by Orgelbau Klais , and in 1999 it was reconstructed or restored by Klais. The organ has 37 stops on two manual works and a pedal . The Spieltrakturen are mechanically, the Registertrakturen electrically. In 1968 the church received an 11-register choir organ.

Bells

The following aural assessment of the peal was made by the music director Jakob Schaeben (1905–1980) from Euskirchen :
The large peal achieves a splendid effect with melodic and harmonic clarity and a spirited flow of sounds. The 6 bells were all cast in 1964 by the bell founder Hans Georg Hermann Maria Hüesker, Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock .
