The Laurentiuskirche is a former village church in what is now Leipzig 's Leutzsch district .

history

In 1397 a chapel on the site of today's Leutzsch church was elevated to a parish church and consecrated to St. Laurentius . The oldest surviving part of today's building is the lower part of the choir tower . The star rib vault in the basement of the tower dates from the 15th century.

In the first half of the 16th century the Leutzsch parish became Protestant. Today's octagonal upper tower floor with the baroque French dome was built in 1689. In 1852 and 1890 the nave was completely renovated. During the latter renovation, it received another window axis, a polygonal apse and a sacristy on the south side. The pulpit and baptismal font also come from this renovation. In 1900, the interior space had to be expanded again for the new, larger organ that had previously been purchased. The previous flat ceiling was replaced by a flat barrel vault and the ship was given a west building with two flanking polygonal stair towers. Further work on the church took place in the 20th century. Most serious was the removal of the side galleries in 1961.

Furnishing

The winged altar with seven carved figures was created at the beginning of the 16th century. The plague saints Rochus , Sebastian and Antonius are depicted in the central shrine . The wings show Wolfgang and Laurentius on the left, Maria and Elisabeth on the right. The altar may have been erected on the occasion of the plague epidemic in 1520. The predella with a depiction of Veronica's handkerchief was added as part of a restoration in 1933.

The two stained glass windows in the choir were created in 1949 based on designs by Paula Jordan . The organ of the Dresden company Jehmlich was installed in 1897 and given a general overhaul in 2002.

The three bells of the Laurentiuskirche date from 1953. They are consecrated to Maria, Katharina and Susanna.

The tombstones on the outside walls of the church are from the 18th century and originally stood in the churchyard.
