The Evangelical Lutheran Halligkirche St. Margarethen is a church building on the Hallig Gröde in Schleswig-Holstein . The building stands on the Kirchwarft in the middle of the old cemetery ; in addition to the church, it contains the school and the teacher's apartment (formerly the pastor's office). The independent congregation is looked after by the parish of Hallig Langeneß , it does not employ its own pastor. The congregation belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Northern Church .

history

The church probably had six predecessor churches that fell victim to various storm surges . In the second Marcellus flood in 1362, the first Gröder church was destroyed. The second church stood until 1615, the third was destroyed ten years later. The fourth church was destroyed in the Burchardi flood in 1634, the fifth church was damaged by a toppling windmill in 1717 and destroyed in the New Years flood in 1721 . After the terp was raised, another church was built in 1721, which was damaged in a storm surge in 1751, but could be repaired. As the Halligufer moved closer to the church, the current building was built in 1779 on today's Kirchwarft. It is covered with a thatched roof. The school has been closed since 2012 because there are no school-age children on Gröde.

Furnishing

The historical folding altar with depictions of the life of Jesus
  • The altar from 1592 is in the Renaissance style. The shrine shows the crucifix in the center , surrounded by the life story of Jesus depicted in six reliefs. The wings are labeled with the words of institution as spoken at the sacrament celebration. The names of the donors are recorded in the predella and in the lower fields of the right wing.
  • The pulpit dates from the 16th century and was supplemented by a pulpit cover in 1695.
  • The octagonal dome of the wooden baptismal font , also decorated with reliefs from the 16th century.
  • The triumphal cross from around 1500 is considered remarkable.
  • The epitaph painting of Pastor Petrus Liebenberg, who died in 1666 after more than 50 years of service, shows portraits of him and his wife as well as a depiction of the Last Judgment .
  • A carved panel commemorates the churches destroyed in 1625 and 1634 and, like two carved epitaphs, is a remarkable testimony to the art of carving.

Trivia

In the journal Die Gartenlaube from 1874 it is reported: It is not easy to think of something more terrifying than a storm night on a small clod of earth in the middle of the sea, when foaming waves break through the walls and the residents have to seek shelter in the gable of the house. And so that the horror should not be lacking in the terrifying, one tells from the middle of the last century of the pastorate of Hallig Gröde that at that time a storm surge tore the coffins out of the graves; they hit the walls of the house with the waves and penetrated the room. "So in the howling of the storm the dead came to call the living".
